SUPERSEP™ - CF

The SUPERSEP™ – CF Crossflow lamella-type solids separator

For superior separation of certain types of settleable solids such as anaerobic sludge from water, GWE developed the compact crossflow SUPERSEP™ – CF system. This system is a unique type of lamella separator (parallel plate separator) with modular plate package modules. Its design is similar to the topworks separation system used in our ANUBIX™ anaerobic reactors and thus is based on a principle proven in hundreds of full-scale applications and decades of performance history.

The SUPERSEP™-CF offers:

  • Crossflow solids separation and turbulence-free sludge evacuation from the chamber, which is essential for separating the fragile organic sludge flocs in anaerobic sludge;
  • A high removal efficiency on waste streams with high inlet solids concentration;
  • Suppressed degasification and the associated settling problems, thanks to their horizontal isobaric flow pattern;
  • Retention of floating matter and scum in front of the effluent collection channel;
  • Practical container-sized steel tank or tailor-made rectangular concrete basin construction, with minimal head loss to permit gravity flow to subsequent treatment steps.

Lamella separators offer several advantages over other gravity separators, including being able to accept a high surface loading rate, which results in a very compact and cost-effective system.

Smaller standard units are built in steel tanks with standard container sizes and two longitudinal sludge collection troughs. To ensure uninterrupted and efficient operation, each trough is equipped with a sludge conveying auger.

In these smaller units, the inlet and outlet connections are installed on opposite (long) sides to prevent short-circuiting.

Larger units are built in concrete, with several conical sludge collection “funnels” at the bottom to ease settled solids removal. 

For maximum convenience and unit performance, each funnel is equipped with an independent and adjustable sludge withdrawal system.

These clarifiers are usually designed as twin systems, with two inlets on opposite sides and a central outlet collection system. Depending on the application, an inlet flocculation/degasification chamber and outlet collection chamber can be integrated into the structure, prior to pumping.

How does SUPERSEP™ – CF work?

 

In the GWE SUPERSEP™ – CF separator system, the influent wastewater is distributed over the width of the unit by means of an inlet distribution channel with a perforated bottom. The wastewater flows downwards and sideways through and under a perforated distribution plate.

The wastewater primarily flows horizontally through tilted lamella plate packages. The solids settle, are collected on the plate surfaces, and slide down into the sludge collection area underneath the plates packs.

As the wastewater flows through the length of the chamber, the solids concentration steadily drops. Finally, at the end of the unit, the treated water flows up and is collected in an effluent channel with an adjustable overflow weir.

The effluent channel also serves as a retention barrier for any floating sludge or scum, which can be moved manually or automatically to the side, into a scum collection box. The settled sludge at the bottom of the unit is moved to the center by a rotating auger andcontinuously pumped out.
 

Sludge thickening does not take place in the unit and must be done in a separate operation, if needed. GWE offers various sludge thickening equipment and can provide the best solution for your specific application.
