SUPERFLOT™ – BIOGAS for the best solid-liquid separation in anaerobic wastewater treatment systems

The GWE SUPERFLOT™ – BIOGAS system is used for the highly-efficient removal of anaerobic biomass from the effluent of an anaerobic treatment system. Within the unit, the biomass from the anaerobic reactor is separated from the treated effluent via a Dissolved Biogas Flotation (DBF) process.

How does the SUPERFLOT™ – BIOGAS Dissolved Biogas Flotation system work?

The anaerobic biomass solids are floated to the surface of the SUPERFLOT™ – BIOGAS by a curtain of fine biogas bubbles, similar to the function of the air bubbles in the SUPERFLOT™ – AIR. The fine biogas bubbles are created by dissolving biogas under pressure within a stream of recycled effluent from the unit. After injection of this stream into the lower part of the flotation chamber, the subsequent pressure release results in the formation of fine biogas bubbles, which float to the water surface, carrying the anaerobic biomass solids with them.

Consequently, a floating layer of solids is formed on the surface of the SUPERFLOT™ – BIOGAS which can be easily removed. In order to remove any settled sediment from the flotation unit, the system can be equipped by means of a bottom auger for automated sludge removal.

The separated sludge is returned to the anaerobic system, increasing the biomass concentration and overall sludge retention time within the system. Consequently, the required process volume of the anaerobic treatment system can be significantly reduced, which provides significant economic and system footprint advantages.

In order to maintain a completely anaerobic atmosphere, prevent the loss of biogas to the atmosphere, avoid any issues with odor, and to avoid the introduction of air into the anaerobic treatment process, the system is a completely sealed, gas-tight unit. The largely pre-fabricated system is delivered primarily assembled and can be utilized in both new systems and added to existing reactors, in order to improve treatment performance.
